Lessons learned in 2018-2019
Develop your skills in the fall-- Even if you don’t know what to expect or what is to come, get your hands on the tools and programs you’ll be using for the build season. Get comfortable reading plans; practice measuring, marking, cutting, and drilling aluminum; and if you can get your hands on a roboRio, learn to set it up! |
Get group communication up early-- It can be hard to build a sense of community from nothing, but establishing a central place to share information --and post dank memes-- can be a great way to jumpstart group culture and ensure everyone is on the same page. |
Join the FRC Discord server-- If you have questions, who better to answer them than other FRC teams? |
Set goals for every week-- As a group, make team goals. As an individual, make personal goals. Every week. Check in as a team every day and keep moving forward. If you’re stuck, ask for help! |
Bring plenty of snacks! Everyone is going to get tired. Encourage each other to advocate for breaks, and bring snacks to keep the energy up! |
Make a packing list-- When you pack for competition, make a list and keep track of where you put every tool or material. Label each box you bring with what is inside it. There is nothing worse than showing up for competition and not being able to find a tool |
Practice setting up your pit-- The week before competition, have your members practice setting up and breaking down your pit. Determining how to set up the space ahead of time will make everything go smoothly at the competition |
|
Don't forget to have fun-- Build season and competition can be very stressful, so it is important to remember that FIRST is all about having fun, working as a team, and building something amazing. |
